Wow. The Oregon Supreme Court just ruled that all criminal cases where a court-appointed attorney wasn't assigned within 60 days for misdemeanors and 90 days for felonies must be dismissed. This means hundreds of suspects charged with serious crimes are being let go, mostly in the Portland area. Oregon has been suffering from a critical shortage of public defenders due to poor leadership. The state already spends $300 million per year, and pay for public defenders is among the highest in the country.
