The following year, Texas Monthly produced its award-winning "Bum Steers" cover, which was inspired by National Lampoon and featured a photo illustration of Cheney pointing a gun toward the camera, with the caption: “If You Don’t Buy This Magazine, Dick Cheney Will Shoot You in the Face.” Then-editor Evan Smith explains how it all came together.
