i set up my new arm based vps (rented at netcup) for personal use and did the thing where i sync my Documents folder with unison bidirectionally. it's just a cronjob. also have a cronjob that makes a daily and a weekly backup of that folder on the server using tar. both are just a single line of invoking a utility. combined with the internet speeds & storage available today it's just simple & good :3

EDIT: thank you all, netcup it is! for hosting my private files i'm looking for a VPS hoster (not hetzner this time) that is affordable for like 1TB of storage. any recommendations? i liked digital ocean in the past but it's a bit too deluxe and expensive for my personal use.
