It was built in neo-Gothic style between 1911 and 1912 near Gaspra, on a cliff overlooking the sea (40 meters high) and is the work of the Russian architect Leonid Sherwood. The castle dominates the cape of Ai-Todor on the Black Sea and stands a short distance from the ruins of the Roman camp of Charax.
