The Bee Gees twin brothers Robin and Maurice Gibb were born on the Isle of Man on this day in 1949 (December 22)
After emigrating from the UK, the Gibb brothers started their career in Australia and went on to become one of the most dominant bands in the world.
The Bee Gees have sold over 120 million records worldwide (with estimates as high as over 220 million), making them among the best-selling music artists of all time.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997; the Hall's citation says, "Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees."
With nine #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, the Bee Gees are the third-most successful band in Billboard charts history behind only the Beatles and the Supremes.
Following Maurice's sudden death from a heart attack in January 2003 at the age of 53, Barry and Robin retired the group's name after 45 years of activity.
In 2009, Robin announced that he and Barry had agreed that the Bee Gees would re-form and perform again. Robin died from kidney failure after suffering cancer in May 2012, aged 62, after a prolonged period of failing health, leaving Barry as the only surviving member of the group.

This week in 1985, the Mr Mister single “Kyrie” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #61 (December 21)
It eventually rose all the way to #1 in the US, and stayed there for for two weeks, also topping the charts in Canada, peaking at #3 in Switzerland, #5 in Austria, #6 in Sweden and the Netherlands, #7 in Belgium and Germany, and #11 in the UK and Australia.
The lyrics to "Kyrie" were written by Arizona-born John Lang who co-wrote the songs on all of Mr. Mister's albums.
The music was composed by Mr Mister singer and bass player Richard Page, and keyboard player Steve George, while on tour with Adam Ant.
“Kýrie, eléison” means "Lord, have mercy" in Greek, and is a part of many liturgical rites in Eastern and Western Christianity. Kýrie, eléison; Christé, eléison; Kýrie, eléison is a prayer that asks "Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy."
According to Page the entire song is, essentially, a prayer.
