Listening to The Fedi Files, they brought up watchmojo and it got me thinking about the economics of slop. Few care about this, but watchmojo predates youtube. It was created by a set of marketing grads from the University of Montreal. They saw the teeming mass adoption of nerd pop culture and decided to capitalize on this upward swing. They engaged film studios, and large beverage firms, for not only the rights to use these clips, but to be paid to promote them. Their profitability doesn't rest on youtube as a platform, which is how they've endured the adpocalypse. I like to think of them as the .com bubble Mr. Beast, both companies became *popular* in the same way.
