From Ovarit, data security and photos: When you share a photo online, it may contain personal data. Digital photos often have EXIF data embedded in them, which contains information such as when the photo was taken, what kind of camera it was taken with, and where it was taken. Not every site scrubs that data when you upload the photo. With the right tools, a malicious actor can get VERY precise coordinates as to where you took your picture. So if you shared a nice photo of your freshly knitted sweater to o/ArtsAndYarns, and it’s lying on your bed, now TRAs literally have a map to your house. I use an iPhone. If you have one and go to your Photos app and click the little i to see info, it will show you the EXIF data. But don’t worry. You can remove it. Just download an app or find a web app that scrubs EXIF data. Use it, then check the newly saved photo in your Photos app again. If the process worked, all that information will be gone. Please note that EXIF data is used by your phone for some fun stuff. My Photos app makes nice photo videos every so often, or reminds me what I was up to this time last year or last time I was at a given location. I really enjoy it. So if you scrub every photo you take, those features may not work. An Ovarit admin commented that the info is scrubbed on Ovarit. But it's still valuable to know.
