Why properly interoperable services, or else bridges, help: A group of people are trying to organise FOSDEM communications. A and B use both XMPP and Signal, but not Matrix. C uses XMPP, Signal, and DeltaChat, but not Matrix. D and E use both Signal and Matrix, but not XMPP. F uses only XMPP. Solution? Email.

It always makes me sad when another fedi user - and, in my experience, it is always a woman - says that they feel unsafe posting here, because of replies they get. Control over who can reply to a toot would be amazing, as a way to improve this without them needing to mute or block post-harm.
As someone who likes to tinker with my presentations until shortly before I give it, I struggle quite badly with events where I can't use my own computer, or at least use a hosted version of my presentation, when I present. (I appreciate why an organiser might want to have all the slides stored locally, ahead of time. I get it. I just don't like it!)
I have very nearly finished my presentation for FOSDEM. I will sleep on it for a bit, make final changes and then send it in. This is a happy day.
Here's a little advanced computer tip for you all on a Friday, definitely not based on recent personal experience. If you have plugged in a cable, and it does not work, ensure that the end of the cable that you have plugged in is part of the same cable as the other end of the cable. This can really make a difference. Yours bemusedly, Neil
Something either is, or is not, a false dichotomy.
