Last Ctrl-Alt-Speech of the year is coming out shortly, but with this new trend of EVERY DAMN SERVICE on the internet doing a year-end "wrapped" here's our podcasting service, Riverside, showing that @benwhitelaw.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy and I laugh a lot. It's... kinda creepy. https://oyster.us-east.host.bsky.network/xrpc/com.atproto.sync.getBlob?did=did:plc:cak4klqoj3bqgk5rj6b4f5do&cid=bafkreiefsijdzlwikmxs3oy2d4crqa5kcgicjm3raoti6ovxwgczr5w3bu
As both the House & Senate look to repeal Section 230, I'm curious who they think should be held liable for the comments they've left open on the Epstein photo dump...? Them? Dropbox? Do they have a trust & safety team watching the comments? View quoted note →
Really great piece by @charlottewillner.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy & @davidsullivan.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy highlighting how at the very same time Congress was claiming to want to "protect the children online," the White House was announcing that it's blocking visas for trust & safety workers who actually help kids be safe State Dept. It's possible I spend too much time listening to podcasts. https://oyster.us-east.host.bsky.network/xrpc/com.atproto.sync.getBlob?did=did:plc:cak4klqoj3bqgk5rj6b4f5do&cid=bafkreidrcljrdl5nvbx6ugfhrmzzlc5myx3klsbj4n5b77cmczemgquv3m
And, yes, many people asked for it. The number one complaint from people who joined and then bailed was the inability to find their friends.
Instead, Bluesky spent quite some time refusing to do that because they know how user unfriendly that can be. Instead, they came up with a very thoughtful and privacy-protecting, double opt-in method of doing it... and people insist that it's the same thing they refused to do for years. 🙄
We're a couple of weeks into our fundraising campaign, where you can get our first Techdirt challenge coin, celebrating 30 years of Section 230. This is becoming more important than ever as 230 is under attack. Just yesterday a bill was released that would kill 230 rtb.techdirt.com/products/fri... https://oyster.us-east.host.bsky.network/xrpc/com.atproto.sync.getBlob?did=did:plc:cak4klqoj3bqgk5rj6b4f5do&cid=bafkreiaaxkrzleghljdifumsv4adt6e6n2nwkisng2u6gwm43puiawn4wq
But, we can't keep doing this work if we're no longer around. So we need your support to make sure Congress doesn't set the remains of the open internet on fire, to hand it to the oligarchs who lined up behind Trump. rtb.techdirt.com/products/fri... Friend Of Techdirt
At a time when 230 is so under attack, in ways that would fundamentally damage the entire concept of an open internet, and hand it to a few internet giants who can afford the legal bills, we need good, accurate reporting on what Section 230 is, and what these "reforms" would do. That's us.
I spend a ton of time debunking fundamentally factually incorrect takes on Section 230, at a time when "the paper of record," the NYT has had to run multiple corrections admitting it totally misrepresented 230. I detailed some of our best 230 coverage: www.techdirt.com/2025/12/17/s... Section 230 Faces Repeal. Supp...
