A video has emerged showing, with disturbing clarity, how the Greek Coast Guard endangers the lives of vulnerable people seeking protection in Europe.
Over the last five years, the Aegean Sea has become the site of countless shipwrecks. In a vast majority of these tragedies, serious questions have been raised about the involvement of Greek authorities — questions that have never been properly investigated.
Greek Coast Guard units consistently go to extreme lengths to prevent boats packed with men, women, and children from reaching the Greek islands. These pushback operations are dangerous by design, carried out on direct political orders from the Greek government.
Thousands of pushback cases have been documented in this period. Thousands of people have drowned. Yet almost none of these deaths have been thoroughly and independently investigated. Instead, they are quietly buried in bureaucracy, deliberately left unanswered, and effectively erased from the public record.
This time, someone managed to capture parts of the operation on video. Normally, these abuses happen under cover of darkness — no witnesses, no recordings, no evidence. As if they never happened.
But they do. Every single day.
And they are illegal.
Under both national and international law, Greece is obliged to rescue people in distress — not endanger them.
Pushbacks violate:
• The 1951 Refugee Convention (non-refoulement, Article 33)
• The European Convention on Human Rights (Articles 2, 3, and 5 – right to life, prohibition of torture, unlawful detention)
• EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (Articles 1, 18, 19)
• UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and SOLAS/SAR Conventions, which require immediate rescue of anyone in danger at sea
• Greek domestic law (Law 4825/2021 and others), which also obliges rescue and prohibits refoulement
There is no legal ambiguity: pushbacks are prohibited, and the deliberate endangerment of lives at sea is a criminal act.
Yet these operations continue, openly and systematically.
Everyone knows. Nothing changes.
These are not “isolated incidents”.
They are EU-sanctioned, EU-funded, and Frontex-supported violations — carried out with full knowledge of European institutions and paid for with European taxpayers’ money.
Too many have already died in these waters.
How many more must die before we stop this insanity?
The video is, as far as we have been informed, from last year, but shows in all clarity what has been ongoing since 2020 until this day in the Aegean Sea.
