Blessings of Lughnasadh, the First Harvest. The afternoon light is getting longer, more amber, hazier. The vegetables are getting mature, the berries are in the freezer. The herbs are flowering. The moon looks smokey against the night sky. #lughnasadh #HailLugh #TheFirstHarvest #OldGods
The days are inching toward Lughnasadh. The harvests are well underway as the mountains get smokier and the buzz of insects in the afternoon gets more insistent. Even as the days get hotter, I yearn for cool autumn mornings wet with dew and the fragrance of bracken browned in the sun. #lughnasadh #FirstHarvest #gardening #Orchard #homesteading #Pagan #paganism
Shelling type peas are a luxury in the garden since they produce a low amount of food volume for the amount of space they take to grow. But, the old timey early mornings of shelling peas on the veranda with coffee and nothing but the birds outside and the cats for company is deep peace that can't be bought. All of these got blanched and put into the freezer for winter. #homesteading #gardening #FoodPreservation #harvest image
It's hard to remember than even though the world is fucked up, you can't do everything. You can take care of your own little part of the world. Grow food if you can. Look after your family if you have family. Look after your friends if you have friends. Create the world for yourself that you want to see everywhere. #prepping #homesteading #GetPrepared
Did an inspection on all 4 hives, and a total inspection on my weakest hive this morning with my daughter. I've been a little worried about this one since they didn't seem to be growing as fast as the other spring split. But wow. They are small but just fine. Lovely brood formation with brood in all stages. They are getting on with it. #beekeeping #apiary #bees #honeybees #homesteading
@npub15a43...qd0c During fire season here, I make a list in exact order of what to do first to last, if tactically evacuated, and tape it on the inside of the door I will be leaving from. If I am woken at 3 AM, I know I will be disorientated and forget things so the list is the first go-to. And also, during those worst days, I keep halters on my 2 cats so I can catch them easier. If they know I am freaked out, they will be too and might hide somewhere. I keep my stocked up tent trailer hitched to the truck and a large dog crate in the back for my hens, already with food and water. I keep EDC kits in the vehicles too.
No-buying Prepping ideas Many people are discouraged from prepping because of the expense, they often only think prepping means buy buy buy from all those over-priced prepping outlets they see on youtube. But, there are a TON of things you can do that are free or almost free if you use your imagination. Here are a few tips: -Download free online diy and how-to manuals (look up military field manuals, survival guides, bushcraft, first aid, self-defence) -Draw up important phone number lists to keep in your vehicles, and evac kits -Take photos of all your possessions, rooms in your house, etc. for insurance purposes -Watch yt and other videos on how to repair tools, learn foraging, new/old skills, etc. -Form or join a mutual aid group to volunteer teaching your skills and learning new skills from others such as canning food, repairing machinery, etc. -If you have useful stuff you don't want, attend swap meets and bartering events -Practice in the field with your gear such as starting a fire in the rain/snow, (without fuel or dry matches) Set up a tent in the wind. Hitch/unhitch a trailer in the dark at 3 AM. -Organize your house, store rooms, gear, and make notes and lists of what you have/need -Build evac kits from what you already have around the house with notes to add to when funds allow. You might be surprised at how many items you have in duplicate, like flashlights, etc. -Find old maps or free ones from tourist info centres of your area and label important infrastructure such as main roads, back roads, bridges, tunnels, water sources, visit these sites and make notes for things like possible road obstructions in storms, and detours, hazards in extreme weather, and how to overcome them. Also, make a note of the location of institutions such as hospitals, police, fire departments, ambulance & paramedic, forest service centres, emergency communication centres, and locations that have been pre-determined as evacuation centres or meeting points for your family/group -Make fire starters with paper egg cartons, saw dust, dryer lint, old wax. Make em fancy with dry cones, etc. and give as gifts. Also, most of the above could be given as gifts as well, such as printing out manuals, etc. Bartered or traded items. Not free but cheap. Also, the most important thing to remember is that the best prep is knowledge. Learn as much as you can and you will be resourceful enough to, as they say in the military, Improvise, Adapt, Overcome. #prepping #getprepared #disasterprep #selfreliance
