Another freezing night. Down to -2F. Gave the girls a homemade suet block this afternoon to help keep them warm. Throughout the year I take leftover fats from cooking meat, pour it in to a pie tin, add oats and scratch, then freeze it to use in the winter. This afternoon: "Jeremy, why don't you give Ted a call and see if they need anything." (Our county has been pretty much snowed in for the last week and we are getting down to -2F tonight. Ted and Helen are in their later 80's, they have a 1/4 mile unpaved driveway and heat their house with a woodstove. I'm sure there is some way we can help) We immediately find out that they have run out of scratch for their chickens. I send Jeremy over with 2 large Ziploc bags of scratch, a loaf of banana bread, and a jar of homemade tomato basil soup. While visiting Jeremy gets the scratch out to the barn and feeds some to the chickens. He then helps Ted restock the firewood at the house. Ted had already fallen three times trying to move wood in a wheel barrow across the snow. Jeremy returns home with a jar of Ted's honey and a bottle of wine. This is community. #GM Another night with temperatures in single digits. The cows have a thin layer of frost on their backs. This is good. It tells me that their back fat and winter coats are keeping them insulated in these frigid temps. Our job is to give them plenty of hay and water to fuel their bodies.
