The fact that Vance has three biracial kids whose grandparents are immigrants makes his libel more vulgar and repugnant, not less. Eight years ago, he condemned this sort of bigotry. The number of people Trump had said he’ll deport has gone from 15 million to 18, to 20, to 22. There are somewhere between 12 and 15 million undocumented people in the U.S. His promise to deport Haitians who are here legally isn’t an accident.
Working on a piece about Springfield, and the remarkable bit is just how comprehensively wrong Vance has managed to be about all of it. Every word to leave his mouth has been wrong. He also knows this, knows it’s bad for the country, and knows it will get people hurt. He just doesn’t care.
