The US Civil War was the thing that turned us from a loose collection of states into a single nation. Before, we identified ourselves by what state we came from, after, as Americans.
I used to joke with Europeans after the EU formed. I pointed out all the parallels between the EU and the pre-Civil War USA. I joined that they were over civil war away from becoming us.
I never dreamed that the inciting incident would be my own country turning into a bunch of anti-European shitbags.
