In January, Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, and did his best to strong-arm newsrooms into using its new moniker, the Gulf of America. Nine months, and many executive orders later, how is it going? Nieman Lab's Joshua Benton says the new name hasn't stuck in media, or in general use — to the extent that a Trump-loving retirement community in Florida refused to rename Gulf of Mexico Drive to Gulf of America Drive. Missed @npub19m6j...8qyp's keynote at this year's @fediforum? Here's the full transcript. "The opportunity right now isn't to build a better Twitter or to provide a nice place for people who care about Linux to chat: it's to build infrastructure that vulnerable people can actually use to organize, to communicate safely, and to build community. In May 2025, Google began to pay CA$100 million a year to media outlets in order to be exempt from Canada's Online News Act. Gretel Kahn of the University of Oxford's Reuters Institute spoke to representatives from The Logic, @npub1vedz...c8mj, IndigiNews and The Rover about how things are going, who gets the money, and where things stand with Meta, which decided to remove all news for Canadians rather than pay up. “If companies like Google and Facebook want to play that role in being a trusted information source and they want people to come to their platform, trust it and be doing good things with circulating information, I don’t think it’s a crazy idea that they should be expected to pitch in funding journalism,” said The Tyee's Jeanette Ageson. #Media #SocialMedia #Canada #News #Journalism #Meta #Google
