Born in 1906, computer scientist Grace Hopper invented the first compiler for computer programming language & was among the first programmers of the Harvard Mk1 computer.
Hopper popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages & paved the way to develop COBOL (an early high-level programming language). She originated the term "bug" to describe computer glitches & became a celebrated Rear Admiral in the US Navy.
We hear a lot about famous men like Einstein & Darwin.
But there are so many incredible stories of other pioneering trailblazers who have made significant contributions in #science, math, engineering & more, yet haven’t been credited, acknowledged or celebrated.
And when we don’t see ourselves in the #history of STEAM, we may not recognize we are all capable of great achievements too.
That’s why I share the stories you see at #HistoryRemix
One of the world’s longest-running experiments has been going for 144 years!
In 1879, botanist William Beal wanted to study how long buried seeds would remain viable. He buried bottles w different seeds in a secret spot on Michigan State's campus.
Every 20 yrs, a small group scientists dig up the bottles & seeds continue to germinate 🌱 (My husband @npub18m07...x7q7 is the one on the right).
The paper from their last dig is now out so this #science story is back in the news.
What #film or #tv show - (past or current) brings you joy?
Right now I find Julia (on Max) just delightful. The series follows Julia Child as she creates The French Chef.
While I admit I may be biased given I work on a PBS #food show, I don’t think that’s it. The actors are outstanding & it’s beautifully filmed - the colors are somehow both realistic & richer than real life. Characters are people I want to spend time with & every episode makes me smile.
With new folks arriving on #Mastodon every day, a reminder that social media doesn’t have to look like anything we’ve experienced before.
*We* get to build the fediverse. So let’s make it awesome ✨
Tonight my 10yo asked if a woman might run for president next year.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because if a woman runs, you should vote for her,” he explained. “In almost 250 years, there haven’t been any women presidents. We need someone to be the first.”
Couldn’t agree more kiddo.
