It just occurred to me that folx here could have very different interpretations of my stories based on their assumptions when I say I'm nonbinary, and how they picture all the "they"s I talk about.
I specifically omit gendered terms whenever possible, because gender is *rarely* relevant.
There are a few exceptions, such as when I'm being respectful of someone's pronoun preference (and other folx know who I'm talking about), or when the point is *about* gender (like when talking about patriarchy, women's rights, or the manosphere).
To bring this post back to a previous soapbox of mine; yesterday I was at the doctor's office with my partner, and the doctor used the phrase "you guys" several times while talking about politics with us. At the end of the visit, I pointed out that there were no guys in the room. That ended up with the three of us discussing patriarchal language for a moment before they said thanks for bringing it to their attention and we left. It was a pleasant interaction, and made me think "I need to come up with the most friendly, non-objectionable way of making that point to anyone" so I can just pull it out of my back pocket whenever someone asks "can I help you guys?".
