I have now iced my foot six times today for 30 minutes. Working on the 7th now. The toes seem only about half of black and blue as they were yesterday, so I assume that’s progress. It better be, because I don’t think I can take another week of having only one usable foot. It’s gotten really old.
What drives me nuts about this whole conflict is that many of the very people who demand a two-state solution (which I would like to see), cannot concede the harsh reality that it will never happen while the Palestinians continue to support Hamas, which has repeatedly sworn to prevent that from ever happening. So sure, bring on the #ceasefire, but know it’s just going to kick this hideous can right on down the road for decades to come. image
Humanity has always been a cluster fuck of history where the strong kick the shit out of the weak, and assimilate their wealth and well-being because they can. Each generation likes to think it’s particular current examples are the worst that’s ever been. Not even close. image
Ray Bradbury wrote this great short story called The Toynbee Convector, where a scientist concocts a time traveling hoax so he can claim to have seen and photographed humanity’s brilliant future. He felt that if given hope for a better future, we would aspire to one. Chuh.
I’ve been reminding younger people for 30 years that the one big constant in the universe is that the Arab-Israeli conflict is probably irreconcilable. Anyone who thinks it’s going to get resolved this week, this month, or this lifetime is an admirable optimist. Perhaps we should have taken the United Nations our ancestors created a little more seriously. It might have been a player by now and made a difference.
I’ve heard the argument made with the Palestinians deserve to reclaim their Homeland with an argument that sounded roughly like “because possession is 9/10ths of the law.” But by that standard, it’s been Israeli land since 1948. I don’t mean to sound glib about this. I really am interested in the moral calculuses some use to defend or condemn one position or the other. Sincere replies are welcome. Speeches and agitprop are not.
