GotaTun is a WireGuard® implementation written in Rust aimed at being fast, efficient and reliable.
The European Commission lost the Chat Control 2.0 battle over access to end-to-end encrypted data. By the summer 2026, they will be back with their next attempt: Going Dark. This time some EU member states want to include VPN services. The Going Dark initiative, or ProtectEU as the Commission now calls it, wants to “enable law enforcement authorities to access encrypted data in a lawful manner”. This is a Chat Control 3.0 attempt.

Our latest desktop release, 2025.14, is removing support for OpenVPN entirely. If you rely on OpenVPN you should stay on 2025.13 until the OpenVPN servers are shut down in January 2026. Read more here:

In version 2025.14 of the desktop app, we removed the ability to select OpenVPN as a tunnel protocol.

An important victory – but we still need to stop Chat Control. The Council of Ministers in the EU has, after three years, now reached a common position on Chat Control. The requirement for mandatory scanning (including end-to-end encrypted messaging services) has been removed, which is a major victory. The EU Council failed to implement mandatory mass surveillance. However, in its proposal, they are laying the groundwork for mass surveillance in the future.
