Sly Stone on Monday and now Brian Wilson. Oh heavens. Two of the most innovative and thrilling composers of the twentieth century. Two whose work will be cited and heard and performed as long as humans are around to listen to it. Brian had been in very poor health for some time. I had a chance to go and watch him in Newcastle the last time he was touring; I didn't go, and honestly, I'm glad. He was not in a state to be touring by then. Sadly, he spent his entire life being forced to wring more and more out of his genius, instead of being allowed to take care of himself. But heavens, what a light has now gone out.
