"Research outfit Five Percent has published a new white paper analysing online content published between January 2020 and May 2025. The results indicate that material created with machine learning tools initially overtook human-written content late last year." #news #technology #TechNews #slop #AI #DeadInternet #DeadInternetTheory image
The Black Panther Party was founded #OnThisDay in 1966. From a 2016 article commemorating its 50th anniversary: "The work of the Black Panthers remains important for several reasons. First, they remind us that the problem of police brutality has long been with us [...] Second, the BPP offers a good model of grassroots activism and ideology in practice." #history #BlackHistory #BlackPanthers #BlackPantherParty
"Babbage saw the analytical engine as a mathematical device. After all, it primarily stored and operated on numbers. But Lovelace recognized that a machine designed to crunch numbers could do much more if the numbers represented other things. “Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent.”" Happy Ada Lovelace Day! #AdaLovelace #computers #STEM #WomenInStem #AdaLovelaceDay
"On [this] day in 1964, Dr. Robert Moog introduced the world to a completely new type of instrument that would go on to change the course of music history and influence decades of future instrument design." "The newly released documents reveal how Meta tried to gain a competitive advantage over its competitors, including Snapchat and later Amazon and YouTube, by analyzing the network traffic of how its users were interacting with Meta’s competitors." #news #TechNews #meta #facebook
"Imagine, for a moment, that your browser stopped showing you images. You would still see them referenced in articles, you’d read conversations about them, people making jokes. [...] You would certainly feel pretty left out." #AltText #ImageDescription #accessibility #a11y
Am I the only one who uses the interactive mode for "git commit"? > git commit --interactive I'm not really seeing much about this online, and every time I mention it to someone at work, it's new to them. The only documentation about an interactive mode I see online is for "git add". #git #development #developers image
An idea I'm playing with: A tool that lets you build a basic HTML page, and shows you how to host it for free. #PersonalWebsite #indieweb #OpenWeb
I'm actually pretty surprised that brands are not jumping in on the fediverse as a way to fully control their image. It reminds me of the early days of the web. "In the process of doing his [1994] research, [journalist Joshua Quittner] discovered the unused address mcdonalds.com and he wisely snatched it up. But much to his surprise, this purchase didn’t interest anybody!"
One interesting lesson about the #fediverse is that centralization and algorithms are not all bad. Centralization for managing block lists, and a simple algorithm that shows you posts popular in your network, so that your friends who live in different timezones don't need to repost their posts every few hours. I know some will disagree, but to me the fediverse is not about being against these things on principles, rather approaching them more thoughtfully.
