The UK just blinked on digital ID. Reports (13 to 14 January 2026) say the new digital ID card will be optional for right-to-work checks, with alternatives such as an eVisa or a chipped passport accepted instead.
Digital checks are still mandatory, though, so this is not "scrapped"; it’s reshaped.

Globalisation is DEAD? Or at least, the old version of it is.
This video is a solid prompt to think about what replaces the 1990s to 2010s model: tighter borders, regional trade blocs, friend shoring, energy security, and a lot more digital control.

Looks like No.10 has backed off the compulsory Digital ID plan for right-to-work checks. Digital checks stay, but you can use a passport or eVisa instead. Small win for civil liberties.
Would you ever opt in for convenience?

Today's news cocktail is equal parts scary and surreal.
US: Renee Nicole Good, 37, was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. That's sparked 1000+ protests across the country, and even the Golden Globes saw tribute pins.
Iran: protests are spreading, with reports of a harsh crackdown and major internet and phone disruptions.
Malaysia and Indonesia: Grok on X has been temporarily blocked after concerns over sexualised image misuse, including content involving minors.
Venezuela: Maduro's capture appears confirmed, but social media is already flooded with viral "secret weapon" claims. Treat those as unverified until there's solid reporting.
Meanwhile, Speed basically shut down Nairobi, Jake Paul bought a 6000 acre mega ranch, China tested an airborne wind turbine, and a longtime Nessie hunter says it's just boat wakes.
Are we watching a global pressure build, or just a week where everything hits at once?

New post is live: "Is 2026 the year digital freedom snaps, or the year you take it back?"
You can feel it, can't you?
More age checks, more ID rails, more pressure on encryption, more compliance shaping what you can say, and more friction around self-custody.
I break down what's already in motion for 2026, then finish with practical steps you can take without going off-grid.

Good night, you lovely lot. January can feel quiet in a way that’s a bit sharp, so let tonight be soft instead.
Unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders, and take three slow breaths. You’ve done enough for one day.

TV Licensing is leaning into intimidation again. Even if you've paid, or you've told them you don't need a licence, the letters still warn that an "enforcement officer" may visit. It might be legal, but it can absolutely feel like harassment.
At the same time, Ofcom is investigating X after Grok was reportedly used to generate illegal sexualised imagery, including content involving minors. Starmer has condemned it, but the real test is whether platforms are forced to build proper safeguards, not just issue statements.
In UK prisons, Palestine Action-linked hunger strikers on remand are reportedly close to death. Their demands keep getting framed as "government intervention", but bail and remand sit with the courts, while ministers still choose whether to engage, listen, or ignore the warnings.
And in Minneapolis, Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent, with video and public scrutiny challenging the official narrative.
Different headlines, same pattern: pressure tactics, weak accountability, and ordinary people stuck in the crossfire.

Just watched this: “The 5 levels of Bitcoin wealth” (0.01 BTC to 10+). It’s a fun way to think about scarcity without obsessing over price charts.
Where do you think you sit on the ladder, and what does “enough” look like for you?

Keir Starmer is talking about an X ban being "on the table" after the Grok deepfake mess, and Ofcom has now opened a formal investigation into X under the Online Safety Act.
I've been off Twitter for a year or two anyway, I'm much happier on ActivityPub, Nostr, and Bluesky.
This is exactly why decentralised social matters: you should always have an exit, and you should always own your audience.

The UK says it has "no plans" for a social media ban, but the direction of travel is obvious. The Online Safety Act is live, Ofcom is now investigating X over Grok-fuelled abuse, and ministers are openly pointing at the backstop power to block access if a platform refuses to comply.
Worth watching, then double-check the dates and wording for yourself:
If you want an internet that cannot be switched off by policy drift, you need decentralised Identity, self-hosting, and networks that are not owned by a single gatekeeper.
