New site, same mission: take back a little bit of the internet. I've just launched Be It Me Not You, a Calm, self-hosted space where you can explore ideas without the noise. No algorithms, no tracking feed, no growth targets, just posts, podcasts, and practical steps towards digital autonomy. Start here (welcome post): https://beitmenotyou.online/be-it-me-not-you-blog-podcast-on-ideas-tech/ What are you most tired of online right now: the ads, the outrage, or the constant pull to perform? #BeItMeNotYou #SelfHosting #DigitalPrivacy #Decentralisation #CalmTech #IndieWeb #OpenSource #AutonomousAirwaves
Quick heads up: I was a bit quiet yesterday, and I’ll probably be the same today. I’m not feeling well, so I’m taking a proper rest and keeping things simple. I’m hoping to be back on Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for sticking around, genuinely. If there’s anything you want me to cover next (privacy, self-hosting, Linux, decentralised social), drop it here and I’ll pick it up when I’m back 🙂 #BeItMeNotYou #SelfHosting #Privacy #DigitalSovereignty #Decentralisation #Linux #Rest #AutonomousAirwaves
Transparency didn't delay justice for R. Kelly or Jeffrey Epstein; prosecutors did. CJR lays out the pattern: secrecy, sweetheart deals, missed warnings, and systems that protected powerful men while victims carried the cost. Journalism and public pressure helped force action, not closed doors. If you care about survivor safety, "protecting the system" is not the same as protecting people. Big one for anyone watching privacy and state power. FPF has published the full DHS and CMS agreement that was meant to give ICE access to Medicaid patient data at scale (nearly 80 million people). The text lists fields such as name, address, phone, SSN, date of birth, race and ethnicity, Bank's's routing and account numbers, email, and IP addresses. A judge has allowed a narrower slice of "basic" biographical and contact info to resume flowing from 6 January 2026, while the broader lawsuit continues. Worth a read, and worth asking: how many other "admin" datasets are being quietly repurposed for enforcement? #Privacy #FOIA #Medicaid #ICE #Surveillance #DigitalRights #SelfSovereignty
US House Oversight has just approved a subpoena targeting journalist Seth Harp over his Venezuela reporting, after Rep. Anna Paulina Luna accused him of "leaking classified intel" and "doxxing" a Delta Force commander. Here's the problem: naming government officials, using publicly available info, is not "doxxing". Journalists do not work for the government, and they do not need permission to report on world-changing events. This looks like intimidation, full stop. Also worth remembering: the House passed the PRESS Act in 2024 to curb this exact kind of abuse against newsgathering, and it stalled in the Senate. If you care about a free press, this is one to watch closely. Source:
Iran going offline is a brutal reminder: crypto is not "magic internet money", it's a network. If the internet is cut off, you can still hold keys, sign transactions offline, and verify them later. But you cannot reliably broadcast a transaction to the global chain without some path out (even a tiny one). So does crypto still work? Yes, but in "store and forward" mode, not smooth day-to-day payments. Resilience looks like: self-custody, seed phrase backed up safely, offline signing, and alternative connectivity where available (satellite, radio, mesh, or simply waiting for the net to return). Also, internet shutdowns often hide crackdowns. Keep your eyes on the human rights side of the story, too. The UK Parliament has once again shrugged off the "Repeal the Online Safety Act" petition. The official line has been "no plans to repeal", and Ofcom is pressing ahead with implementation. That matters because once a framework like this hardens into normal life, it rarely gets rolled back. It just expands, gets "updated", and quietly becomes the default. If you care about privacy, encryption, anonymous speech, or running small community sites without drowning in compliance fear, this is one to watch. Self hosting your own Bluesky PDS is a proper step towards owning your identity and content. This video is a solid walkthrough: Quick reality check: the official “easy mode” assumes a public server, DNS A + wildcard records, and ports 80/443 open for TLS and federation. If you try to tuck it behind a custom proxy, expect WebSocket and cert headaches. Are you doing this on a VPS, or at home behind NAT? #Bluesky #ATProto #SelfHosting #DigitalSovereignty #Privacy #OpenSource
Good morning! ❄️ It’s Friday, and early January has that “fresh start” energy, even when the air’s properly nippy. image A little line to carry with you today: “Small steps count, especially the ones you take on cold mornings.” What’s your first move after you wake up, tea, coffee, stretch, walk, journalling, or straight into the chaos?
