Day 2 with NetBSD is proving challenging, but now that the basic pieces are in place, I've been able to get the core applications I need and added some functionality. I've got office software, e-mail, text editing, a music player (and volume control!), and I can restart/shutdown from within Xfce. It's been a busy day of getting things sorted, but I feel like it'll be easier from this point.
I can already tell NetBSD is going to be challenging. I have used it before, but it has been a while since I made a solid go at it. There are several things not working out of the box that I will be tinkering with before I can get to work.
I maintain a (long) e-mail filter which contains a lists of accounts that send spam or repeatedly send us false information about distributions. It's getting long enough it takes Thunderbird several seconds to save it.
