I was one of the earliest advocates of Twitter-style social media. While it always troubled me, I was convinced it would do more good than harm. I got that very wrong. But I still think the social web can evolve something better. But it will be application-, not tech-driven change.

While I am sympathetic to disruption as a tactic when the larger public welfare is directly threatened (abortion, cli-change, Citizens United, SCOTUS corruption, etc.), activists shutting down universities to protest much narrower issues will just inflame this paralyzing acrimony and chaos.
