The UN. That’s the great absent from the ceasefire deal. In a post-WWII (and even post-WWI) order it should be the job of a multilateral institution that enforces international law to ensure lasting peace. It should be its job to draw clear buffer zones under UN control (just like in Cyprus). Enforce international law and borders to respect. Impose an end to unjustified permanent occupations. Prosecute war criminals. Estimate war reparations and establish who should pay for them. Outlaw the parties and ideologies (on both sides) accountable for these tragedies. Establish the compliance framework on both parties (diplomatic, legal, economic or military), so that sufficient pressure is applied to any party that thinks of violating the accord, and incentives are aligned towards keeping the peace. But none of this happened. Instead, maximum pressure with minimum accountability has been applied to a population of 2 million for 2 years until capitulation, until their leaders had no choice but to sign a bad deal stuffed with concessions for the other party that don’t even establish the legal framework to prevent another aggression, nor accountability for the destruction and human loss. And that’s just because at the table there were people that despise the UN, that despise multilaterialism, accountability and international law, and actively divested from it to ensure its failure. This is a world order where instead of a Nuremberg trial you end up with a business-like 1-1 deal with strongmen with much more leverage that don’t give you options, and will be fully unaccountable for their actions. The world lost today. Accountability lost. The multilateral institutions built in the aftermath of WWII just to prevent a return to feudalistic unaccountability have lost. The Society of Nations, built after WWI to prevent another world conflict, faded into irrelevance once fascism took over Europe. The UN, built after WWII to prevent another world conflict, is fading into irrelevance now that unaccountable fascists have again taken over.
