Albert Schweitzer (1875--1965) had a beloved cat called Sizi. When writing at his desk, she often liked to curl up on his left arm -- so rather than disturb her, the naturally left-handed Schweitzer struggled to write with his right hand. His quote, "There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats" is well-known. image #catstr #cats #catposting #caturday

The King of the Cats by Balthus (1935) This is just one of three self portraits completed by Balthus. Balthus was twenty-seven years of age when he painted this work. Balthus had always had a love of cats and in this work we see him standing in a somewhat arrogant and aloof pose, with his beloved cat lovingly rubbing itself against his leg. On the floor, to his left, is a stone slab leaning against a high stool with the inscription: A PORTRAIT OF H.M. THE KING OF THE CATS Painted by HIMSELF MCMXXXV image #art #Balthus #painting #catstr #cats #catposting #caturday

Dali Atomicus by Philippe Halsman Dali Atomicus was created the old-fashioned way - it's all real. In order to achieve the effect, the furniture was held up by wires while #Dali jumped and someone out of the frame hurled a bucket of water and several live cats into the shot. Unfortunately, the desired effect couldn't be achieved in one take, or even two. It had to be done a staggering total of 28 times. Bear in mind that after each shot, some poor person (most likely the '40s equivalent of an intern) would have had to round up the scattered, terrified cats, then throw them at the camera again. image #photography #art #catstr #cats #catposting #caturday
