The majority of 'new homeless' in CA are over 50. And it's only gonna get worse if Trump and Musk blow up the debt, as they've threatened to do. Servicing the national debt (i.e., just paying the interest) has now surpassed the defense budget as the single most expensive item paid for by our tax dollars. With the threatened new tax cuts for the rich, continued multi-billion dollars weapons gifts to Ukraine and Israel, mass deportation, and all the other horrible things they're promising, the debt will grow so big that Congress will have no choice but to axe social security, medicare, education, housing, FEMA and whatever other pitiful "safety net" existed. #workingclass #housing #homelessness #healthcare #weapons #genocide #israel #ukraine #immigration #deportation #trump #musk #fema #medicare #SocialSecurity #tax #congress
Biden signs defense bill despite objections to ban on transgender health care for military children This is a good example of the fallacy that voting Dem will somehow protect the rights and safety of marginalized communities. In reality, both parties represent the interests of the richest 0.1% AND they both exploit marginalized communities to serve their interests. The Republicans vilify marginalized communities, blame them for the problems caused by the rich, try to get them fighting among each other so that they are divided, powerless, and blind to the real sources of their misery. The Dems hold marginalized communities on a pedestal, pay lip service to their suffering, virtue-signal their love for them, do nothing to improve their working & living conditions, and then, when it serves their interests, throw them under the same fucking bus. #workingclass #TransRightsAreHumanRights #lgbtq #military #defense #congress #voting #democrat #republican

Today in Labor History December 23, 1921: President Warren Harding issued a "Christmas amnesty," freeing Eugene V. Debs and 23 other political prisoners who had been imprisoned for their opposition to World War I under the Sedition Act. Debs was a founding member of the IWW, a socialist, and a 5-time candidate for president of the US. In the 1912 election, he won 6% of the vote. He also led the 1894 Pullman Strike of over 250,000 railroad workers. In 2023, the U.S. launched its #WithoutJustCause campaign to seek the release of the over 1 million political prisoners around the world, ignoring/denying the fact that it has its own political prisoners, including Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier, who have been in prison through eight different presidencies. None of these eight presidents even considered granting amnesty to them. Will Biden? Not likely. #workingclass #LaborHistory #prison #union #strike #solidarity #socialism #sedition #IWW #worldwarone #antiwar #politicalprisoner #eugenedebs #mumia #leonardpeltier image
Today in Labor History December 22, 1989: Ion Iliescu overthrew Nicolae Ceaușescu, the Communist dictator of Romania, after days of bloody protests against his repressive rule. Ceausescu and his wife were tried and convicted of genocide against the Romani people, and executed on Christmas Day, 1989. In the 1970s and 80s, Queen Elizabeth had granted him knighthood, and both the U.S. Vice President George H.W. Bush and Secretary of State George Schultz had praised the man. #workingclass #LaborHistory #ceausescu #romania #communism #dictatorship #execution #genocide image

Today in Labor History December 21, 1925: Serge Eisenstein's silent movie The Battleship Potemkin premiered on this date in Moscow. This silent film, which inspired many later film greats, depicts the 1905 mutiny of sailors against their Czarist commanders during the Russo-Japanese war. The massacre on the Odessa steps scene was so iconic that dozens of later films paid homage to it, including Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil,” Brian De Palma’s “The Untouchables,” Peter Sellers’s “The Magic Christian,” Woody Allen’s “Bananas.” The film also influenced artist Francis Bacon. San Francisco’s avant-garde Club Foot Orchestra recreated the original score. Orson Welles, Charlie Chaplin and Billy Wilder all considered it one of the greatest films ever made. #workingclass #LaborHistory #SergeEisenstein #soviet #russia #communism #film #moscow image
