"Americans are too dumb to build things" is the economic equivalent of "stop hitting yourself" while somebody twice your size hits you with your arms.

If we can't draw conclusions from patterns why are we bothering to measure reality at all?
I won't deny that many tall tales are woven to oversimplify complex behaviors, but that's not the same as saying there are no driving forces.
