The #DoomsdayGlacier Is Getting Closer and Closer to Irreversible Collapse An analysis of the expansion of cracks in the #ThwaitesGlacier over the past 20 years suggests that a total collapse could be only a matter of time. by Ritsuko Kawai, Dec 22, 2025 9:43 AM Excerpt: "Known as the '#Doomsday Glacier,' the Thwaites Glacier in #Antarctica is one of the most rapidly changing glaciers on Earth, and its future evolution is one of the biggest unknowns when it comes to predicting global sea level rise. "The eastern ice shelf of the Thwaites Glacier is supported at its northern end by a ridge of the ocean floor. However, over the past two decades, cracks in the upper reaches of the glacier have increased rapidly, weakening its structural stability. A new study by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) presents a detailed record of this gradual collapse process. "Researchers at the Centre for Earth Observation and Science at the University of Manitoba, Canada, analyzed observational data from 2002 to 2022 to track the formation and propagation of cracks in the ice shelf shear zone. They discovered that as the cracks grew, the connection between the ice shelf and the mid-ocean ridge weakened, accelerating the upstream flow of ice." Scientists Thought #Parkinsons Was in Our Genes. It Might Be in the #Water New ideas about #ChronicIllness could revolutionize treatment, if we take the research seriously. By David Ferry, December 10, 2025 Excerpt: "Sometime before 1953, a massive plume of #trichlorethylene, or #TCE, had entered the groundwater beneath #CampLejeune. TCE is a highly effective solvent—one of those midcentury wonder chemicals—that vaporizes quickly and dissolves whatever grease it touches. The spill’s source is debated, but grunts on base used TCE to maintain machinery, and the dry cleaner sprayed it on dress blues. It was ubiquitous at Lejeune and all over America. "And TCE appeared benign, too—you could rub it on your hands or huff its fumes and feel no immediate effects. It plays a longer game. For approximately 35 years, Marines and sailors who lived at Lejeune unknowingly breathed in vaporized TCE whenever they turned on their tap. The Navy, which oversees the Marine Corps, first denied the toxic plume’s existence, then refused to admit it could affect Marines’ health. But as Lejeune’s vets aged, cancers and unexplained illness began stalking them at staggering rates. Marines stationed on base had a 35 percent higher risk of developing kidney cancer, a 47 percent higher risk of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a 68 percent higher risk of multiple myeloma. At the local cemetery, the section reserved for infants had to be expanded. "Meanwhile, Langston had spent the remainder of the 1980s setting up the California Parkinson’s Foundation (later renamed the Parkinson’s Institute), a lab and treatment facility equipped with everything needed to finally reveal the cause of the disease. 'We thought we were going to solve it,' Langston told me. Researchers affiliated with the institute created the first animal model for Parkinson’s, identified a pesticide called #Paraquat as a near chemical match to #MPTP, and proved that farm workers who sprayed Paraquat developed Parkinson’s at exceedingly high rates. "Then they showed that identical twins developed Parkinson’s at the same rate as fraternal twins—something that wouldn’t make sense if the disease were purely genetic, since identical twins share DNA and fraternal twins do not. They even noted TCE as a potential cause of the disease, Langston says. Each revelation, the team thought, represented another nail in the coffin of the genetic theory of Parkinson’s." “Kitchen Sink” Hand Salve (unscented, cat-safe ingredients) 1-1/2 Tablespoons tallow (I used 1 Tablespoon deodorized tallow, 1/2 Tablespoon hand-rendered tallow, which was a bit harder) 2 Tablespoons palm oil (using up what's on hand) 1 Tablespoon cocoa butter (I like that better than the shea butter) 1/2 oz beeswax 1 Tablespoon olive oil Heat ingredients together in a double-boiler on low heat, then pour into a jar. #DIYGifts #CatSafeIngredients #AnimalProducts #LeftoverSoapOils
So, folks should be aware of potential circuit-board failures with some #HeatPumps (#Daikin )... Also, don't use #BRFServices, who tried to scam the couple with bogus charges (and refused to fix the faulty heat pump)! A look at one couple’s experience installing a heat pump in their mobile home in Waterville. By Emmett Gartner Published on: December 21, 2025 Excerpt: "The breakdown between the Callahans and Howe prompted rare intervention on Efficiency Maine’s part. The agency arranged for a second contractor to examine the Callahans’ heat pump. The new contractor ultimately determined it had suffered a fatal circuit board malfunction from a factory defect, Stoddard said. The problem had not been the result of the first contractor’s workmanship, the second contractor told #EfficiencyMaine. "The Callahans’ next-door neighbor also had the same model of heat pump installed by BRF Services and experienced the same glitch, Efficiency Maine confirmed. "In response, Efficiency Maine removed the Callahans’ heat pump model from its list of rebate-eligible heat pumps, though the agency only heard of the two instances in Waterville where it malfunctioned. “Luckily, there were several other models that worked very well, so we just limited eligibility to those other models,” Stoddard said. "Efficiency Maine then paid for the second contractor to install a new heat pump system for the Callahans in late December 2024. It was one of the only times the agency has done so, Stoddard said. "The second heat pump wasn’t perfect: Around New Year’s, it started shutting off after only a few hours of use, Christine Callahan said. The system’s air filter was clogged – which doesn’t usually happen so quickly — but it was replaced, Stoddard said." [...] "The fallout between the Callahans and their contractor demonstrates the value of getting multiple quotes from the more than 800 rebate-eligible contractors on Efficiency Maine’s 'registered vendor list.' Efficiency Maine recommends getting at least three quotes for heat pump work before settling on one specific vendor. The Callahans picked the first and only contractor they spoke with." YES!!! #MaineResists! Mills Lets ICE-Limiting Bill Become Law, Sidestepping Signature as Public Safety Critics Sound Alarm By Jon Fetherston, December 15, 2025 "Gov. #JanetMills (D) announced on Monday she will allow a bill restricting how Maine law enforcement may cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to become law without her signature, advancing a controversial policy change opposed by law enforcement advocates and Republicans. "The legislation, #LD1971, limits when state, county, and local police may investigate, detain, or search individuals solely for immigration enforcement purposes. The bill passed the Maine Legislature largely along party lines at the end of the June session. "Mills had delayed action on the bill, previously calling it overly broad and confusing. Under Maine’s lawmaking process, that delay carried the measure into the next legislative session, where the governor could either veto it or allow it to take effect without her signature. On Monday, Mills said she would choose the latter. "In explaining her decision, Mills said she still has concerns about the bill’s scope but pointed to what she described as increased and politicized immigration enforcement at the federal level as justification for allowing it to become law rather than vetoing it. " 'As a former District Attorney and Attorney General and now as Governor, I carefully considered this bill. I’ve weighed my concerns that it imposes confusing restraints on law enforcement about when they can and can’t interact with Federal authorities against the extraordinary and horrifying actions of a Federal agency that has been #weaponized by the President to undermine the rights of us all. And I also agree with the bill’s aim of ensuring that Maine law enforcement are enforcing Maine laws, not Federal immigration law'. 'LD 1971 is imperfect, and we should not need it, but the times call for it. We cannot turn a blind eye to ICE’s unacceptable actions, and so I have chosen to allow LD 1971 to become law.' said Mills. "Mills, also added 'Under any other president, this may be acceptable, but under this Trump Administration, it has become a broad and dangerous promise that Maine will not make,' she specified." 2nd #AtmosphericRiver to flood #California with firehose of rain into Christmas #HeavyRain and #flooding problems experienced in the #Northwest in recent weeks from atmospheric rivers will shift farther south into California through Christmas Day with major travel disruptions and safety concerns. By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Published Dec 21, 2025 "Two main atmospheric rivers will force copious amounts of #Pacific moisture into #California this week. Heavy rain with incidents of flooding, washouts and mudslides will expand and shift from north to south over the state, leading to travel disruptions at the very least and posing some risk to lives and property in extreme cases. The #SierraNevada will receive many feet of snow as freezing levels lower through the week and the region is affected by both atmospheric rivers. "The storms are hitting at a busy time of the year, with many traveling short and long distances, running errands and planning outdoor activities. "The first atmospheric river was already in progress and will continue to focus on Northern to Central California into Wednesday. A second atmospheric river is forecast to develop and concentrate on Central and Southern California from Tuesday night through Christmas Day. But even beyond Christmas, lingering moisture will lead to additional rounds of showers and mountain snow, according to AccuWeather. "Through Wednesday, much of the #Sacramento Valley and the #SanFrancisco Bay region will receive 2-4 inches of rain with locally higher amounts. The anticipated rainfall for San Francisco in the stormy pattern into next weekend will bring from one to two times the historical average for December. "On the west- and southwest-facing mountainsides of the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada, 4-12 inches of rain will pour down with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 20 inches. "At times, multiple inches of rain can fall in a matter of hours, overwhelming storm drains and causing small streams and short rivers to quickly overflow their banks. As the ground becomes saturated, the risk of debris flows, road washouts and hillside collapses will increase substantially. "From Tuesday night to early Friday, the second atmospheric river will spray rain of varying intensity throughout Central and Southern California. "A general 4-6 inches of rain is forecast to fall on the Los Angeles basin. Downtown, L.A. had seven times its historical average monthly rainfall for November with 5.53 inches. While no rain has fallen so far in L.A. this month, from two to three times December's average rainfall of 2.48 inches may occur with the stormy pattern from Tuesday to Saturday. "On the southwest-facing hillsides of the Transverse Ranges, 6-12 inches will pour down with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 16 inches. Even in many desert areas of Southeastern California, between 0.25 of an inch to 1 inch of rain is expected to fall. "Just as with the first atmospheric river up north, rain will be drenching, leading to rapid urban flooding and flooding of small streams and short-run rivers, along with mudslides, washouts and the potential for hillside slides in Southern California.
