Did you know? Marsupials glow under UV light – and until recently, no one had ever captured it on camera. For the first time, a wild eastern quoll – a rare, carnivorous marsupial found only in Tasmania – has been photographed glowing in ultraviolet. The shot, taken by Australian photographer Ben Alldridge, reveals the quoll’s fur shimmering with biofluorescence, a neon-like glow created when fur absorbs UV light and re-emits it at a visible wavelength. Other mammals – from wombats to polar bears – have been known to glow, but this is the first time the phenomenon has been documented in a quoll in its natural habitat. image
Holding hands with someone you love can reduce pain and stress – instantly. Science studies shown that physical touch between close partners can have measurable effects on the body and brain. In experiments where people held hands with a loved one during moments of discomfort, researchers observed lower heart rates, reduced stress responses, and even less perceived pain. Brain imaging studies found that romantic partners often experience synchronized brain activity during hand-holding – especially when one person is in distress. The stronger the emotional bond, the more pronounced the effect. One study even showed that hand-holding during an anticipated electric shock reduced activity in brain regions linked to fear and pain. image
Scientists found a fungus in the Amazon called Pestalotiopsis microspora that literally snacks on plastic. Pestalotiopsis microspora is not your typical fungus. It can survive entirely on polyurethane, one of the most common (and most persistent) types of plastic β€” and it does so even in oxygen-free environments, like buried landfills. On April 3, 2000, 17-year-old Jeremy Bechtel phoned his father from a party to inform him he would be spending the night and requested a pickup the next day. However, when his father arrived to collect him, both Jeremy and his friend Erin were missing, along with Erin’s car. According to their friends, Jeremy and Erin had left the party together in Erin's car the previous night and hadn't returned. Over the years, various theories circulated about their fate, including speculations they had fled to Florida, been involved in a drug deal gone wrong, or even been seen in a truck, bleeding. Despite pursuing these and other leads, the police could not solve the mystery of their disappearance. Then, years later, a YouTuber who specializes in scuba diving and conducts amateur investigations into missing person cases decided to look into their story. In just a few days, he discovered the car the teens had been last seen in submerged in a nearby river, finally resolving the long-standing enigma of their disappearance. image
