We are a group of materialist socialists and feminists involved in the development of Your Party - the UK’s newest party.
WHAT DO WE WANT?
We want this new party to support respectful open debate and discussion on issues of sex and gender. As materialists we believe in the reality of biological sex, that women & girls are subject to discrimination and oppression on the basis of their sex, and that women have the right to organise around their material interests. It is inconsistent with a materialist analysis of sex-based oppression to attempt to sideline women’s sex-based protections, or to overwrite sex in law with gender identity. At a time when women’s reproductive rights are coming under pressure across the Western world, it is vital materialists remain focused on the fact that the exploitation of women’s bodies is central to women’s oppression, and understand how this exploitation links to other forms of class-based material extraction.
Without recognising sex, it is impossible to understand why rape, domestic violence, forced birth, female genital mutilation, honour killing, domestic exploitation, the gender pay gap, sexual harassment etc., are harms particularly aimed at women. To address these harms we believe our political parties, laws, policies & institutions need to be clear on the distinction between sex and gender identity. Our activity is grounded in robust evidence of public support for the sex-based rights of women and girls. Recent polling by YouGov UK in May 2025 (following the UK Supreme Court ruling on the definition of sex in UK equality law in For Women Scotland v The Scottish Ministers) found that 63% of people believe the Supreme Court Judgement was correct to rule that the words “sex”, “man” and “woman” in the Equality Act 2010 (EA2010) refer to biological sex. Only 18% believe that it was wrong."
