Think public transit “doesn’t work” in your city or suburb? If that’s true, it wasn’t a foregone conclusion — it’s because of choices made. Land-use, funding, infrastructure & operational decisions. If you get fundamentals like frequency wrong, it fails. Make good choices. image
“Currently about 2/3rds of all Dutch children walk or bike to school, with 75% of secondary school kids cycling to school. By enabling safe and active travel, Dutch cities prevent an estimated one million car journeys to school each morning.” — Chris and Melissa Bruntlett in #CurbingTraffic @npub1t9fr...5htd image
As our kids go #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re using as an excuse. If more walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a massive number of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school. Spread the word. image
This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes break traffic laws while riding, yet 66% of people do so when driving. And if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. “In Finland, the # of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.” https://scoop.me/housing-first-finland-homelessness/
This will be the nuclear moment for twitter. Every previous awful decision has been leading to this. image
This is interesting — can we entice employees back to working in the office by bringing back the idea of an enjoyable, sociable lunch in the neighbourhood? In France, eating in the office is actually against the rules, and employers pay for lunch in local restaurants. What do you think? Probably only works in walkable urban places? https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-08-11/to-bring-back-the-office-bring-back-lunch
“If you look at it from the perspective of the status quo, it will always feel like the right thing to do is to widen the road,” said Brent Toderian. But he characterizes highway expansions as giving car addicts “another hit.” The Denver Post’s Sunday front page.
