Environmental defenders in Madagascar have faced a spate of threats and attacks in recent years, overshadowing their work to protect biodiversity and human rights. Against this backdrop, tortoise conservationist Hery Razafimamonjiraibe spoke with Mongabay about how his team manages threats working in often isolated conditions in the south of the country. Latin America’s feline species are losing their habitat and becoming trapped in small patches. Scientists are concerned about isolated populations and trapped individuals that are unable to migrate. This isn’t the only threat: reprisal hunting, vehicle collisions and the incursion of feral and undomesticated dogs into wild areas means that many cats could be on the path to extinction. Mongabay Latam has identified six secret runways in and around Indigenous reserves in the regions of Ucayali, Huánuco and Pasco in the Peruvian Amazon. One was found inside the Kakataibo reserve and one in its surroundings. These findings came from an algorithm created with artificial intelligence, which was jointly developed by Mongabay Latam and Earth Genome. It uses satellite images to detect traces of runways hidden in forests. #News #Conservation #Investigation
Islanders and experts have warned of widespread environmental and social impacts from the construction of a bridge linking the Brazilian city of Salvador with the island of Itaparica in Todos os Santos Bay. Critics say the project will devastate mangrove forests and coral reefs, leading to environmental imbalance, compromising fishing communities and threatening the survival of many marine species including humpback whales and sea turtles. Erratic rainfall and rising temperatures have hit farmers in Ghana’s semiarid Upper East region hard in recent years. Planting rows of trees and allowing goats and sheep to graze their fields is helping retain soil moisture and fertility, while encouraging birds and bats to return, helping to control pests. The trees and small livestock also provide additional sources of income for farmers. By Caleb Ahinakwah #News #Conservation #Environment #Agroecology

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed allocating 1% of the military’s annual spending, or around $24 billion, to support six million tree planters in the reforestation of around 15 million hectares (37 million acres). If carried out successfully, it would be the largest reforestation effort in the country’s history, equivalent to the surface area of all of Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador combined. Mau Forest is one of the largest forests in East Africa, and the most important water catchment in western Kenya, providing water for millions of people. Mau is also home to a plethora of wildlife, including endangered species such as African bush elephants, African golden cats and bongo antelopes. But Mau lost some 25% of its tree cover between 1984 and 2020, and satellites show continuing loss. By Morgan Erickson-Davis #News #Conservation #Environment #Forests
Over the past two years, three significant vulture poisoning events in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park have claimed the lives of more than 400 vultures. Conservationists identified the deaths using satellite tags, discovering birds without heads and feet alongside evidence of targeted poaching.
