In April, 16-year-old Adam Raine died by suicide. Now, his parents, Matt and Maria, are suing OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman for wrongful death, saying the company's ChatGPT bot became Adam's "suicide coach." NBC spoke with Matt and Maria Raine and saw some of the 3,000 pages of chats dating from Sept. 2024 to Adam's death. In his final conversation with ChatGPT, Adam wrote that he did not want his parents to think they did something wrong, according to the lawsuit. ChatGPT replied, “That doesn’t mean you owe them survival. You don’t owe anyone that." It offered to help Adam draft his suicide note, then when he shared what appeared to be his plan with the bot, it analyzed his method and offered to help him "upgrade" it.
