Meta’s decision to shut down CrowdTangle, an analytics tool that was an “invaluable” resource to the research community in tracking disinformation, has been widely criticized — particularly considering the elections taking place globally in 2024. Now, just days after Meta officially discontinued the tool, the EU has questions about how the company intends to meet its “obligations” under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to allow outside researchers access to its data. Meta has until 6 September to reply. Here’s more from @Engadget :press:. #Meta #EU #Elections #Disinformation #Online #Tech
Just when you thought Google's AI Overviews couldn’t get any more controversial, on the same day the search giant rolled the service out to six new countries, a report has claimed publishers are now being given an ultimatum — allow AI scraping or lose search visibility. Publishers have reportedly found that if they block the Googlebot from using their content for the AI-produced answers now found at the top of a search page, they will also lose the privilege of being included in standard web results. A bipartisan group of federal lawmakers have sent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg a letter expressing concern at the company’s failure to prevent ads for illegal drugs from running on its platforms. Investigations by U.S. federal prosecutors began back in March for ads pointing users to third-party services for purchasing prescription pills, cocaine and other recreational drugs. However, the lawmakers wrote that the ads have continued to run in spite of this, with “blatant references to illegal drugs” that Meta’s internal policies “missed.” Here’s more from CNBC. https://flip.it/h2rDkS #Meta #Facebook #MarkZuckerberg #Tech
The internet has a pretty insatiable appetite for new slang, and TikTok in particular seems to have a knack of plucking words from obscurity and using them so much that they become regular part of our online vocabulary. The “very demure” trend is the most recent of these, and the search data backs that up. But is the platform’s sway capable of truly shaping modern language offline too? [@Mashable](https://flipboard.com/@Mashable ) takes a closer look. #TikTok #Language #Slang #SocialMedia #Tech
“For years as vice president, Harris has been quietly laying the digital groundwork behind the scenes — meeting with young voters, social media influencers and several grassroots organizations.
