🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image On this day in 1984, the Foreigner LP “Agent Provocateur” debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #47 (December 22) Foreigner’s fifth studio album contains the band's biggest hit single, the rock ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is", which is their only #1 single on the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, staying at the top spot for three and two weeks, respectively. The recording of the album was problematic, and took over nine months, starting with Trevor Horn as producer, who backed out of the project after a few months feeling that he and the band were heading in different directions, replaced by Alex Sadkin, who recalled in 1987: "The Foreigner project a couple years back, on the other hand, just seemed to go on and on. Everyone, including the band, got really pissed off with it. They're used to it, though, and I wasn't, so it just threw me. I couldn't believe what was going on! There was a problem with people not coming in; Mick (Jones), who is the leader, not showing up for hours and hours, and so that obviously would really slow it down. Then the songs wouldn't be really ready. While the album was being mixed the lyrics were still being written! Things were being changed right up to the last minute, and that is what took a long time. That is why I don't want to go into the studio when somebody wants to write the stuff there; it just takes too long and it isn't worth it, it doesn't come out right. You can't write properly in the studio because you're under pressure. How can you really be creative when you're watching the clock going round burning up the money?" It worked this time for Foreigner though, because the album was a worldwide success, going all the way to #1 in the UK, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden, #2 in Australia, #3 in Canada, #4 in the US and New Zealand, #5 in Finland, #6 in Japan, #10 in Austria, #12 in the Netherlands, #15 in France, and #20 in Italy. #AgentProvocateur, #foreigner, #80smusic, #dailyrockhistory, #iwanttoknowwhatloveis, #80srock, #mickjones, #lougramm, #rockhistory, #thisdayinrock, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image The Bee Gees twin brothers Robin and Maurice Gibb were born on the Isle of Man on this day in 1949 (December 22) After emigrating from the UK, the Gibb brothers started their career in Australia and went on to become one of the most dominant bands in the world. The Bee Gees have sold over 120 million records worldwide (with estimates as high as over 220 million), making them among the best-selling music artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997; the Hall's citation says, "Only Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees." With nine #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, the Bee Gees are the third-most successful band in Billboard charts history behind only the Beatles and the Supremes. Following Maurice's sudden death from a heart attack in January 2003 at the age of 53, Barry and Robin retired the group's name after 45 years of activity. In 2009, Robin announced that he and Barry had agreed that the Bee Gees would re-form and perform again. Robin died from kidney failure after suffering cancer in May 2012, aged 62, after a prolonged period of failing health, leaving Barry as the only surviving member of the group. #beegees, #robingibb, #mauricegibb, #ivegottagetamessagetoyou, #nightfever, #saturdaynightfever, #jivetalking, #twins, #stayinalive, #howdeepisyourlove, #tragedy, #morethanawoman, #70smusic, #youshouldbedancing, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday, #rockandrollhalloffame "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1985, Heart’s self-titled LP went to #1 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (December 21) Despite having a career featuring some brilliant LPs, this was Heart's only album to ever top the US Billboard 200. The album also contained the band's first ever US #1 single, "These Dreams", along with four other singles: "What About Love", "Never", "Nothin' at All", and "If Looks Could Kill", with the first four all reaching the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics for “These Dreams” were written by legendary Elton John collaborator Bernie Taupin, who wrote it with Stevie Nicks in mind, but she turned it down, as did Kim Carnes, before it was offered to Heart. Singer-songwriter Martin Page, (who co-wrote "We Built This City" and "King of Wishful Thinking"), composed the music. On the album, this song was dedicated to Sharon Hess, a good friend of Nancy Wilson's who died of Leukemia. At the 28th Annual Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. #heart, #annwilson, #nancywilson, #thesedreams, #80smusic, #80srock, #womeninrock, #thisdayinrock, #rockhistory, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image This week in 1985, the Mr Mister single “Kyrie” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #61 (December 21) It eventually rose all the way to #1 in the US, and stayed there for for two weeks, also topping the charts in Canada, peaking at #3 in Switzerland, #5 in Austria, #6 in Sweden and the Netherlands, #7 in Belgium and Germany, and #11 in the UK and Australia. The lyrics to "Kyrie" were written by Arizona-born John Lang who co-wrote the songs on all of Mr. Mister's albums. The music was composed by Mr Mister singer and bass player Richard Page, and keyboard player Steve George, while on tour with Adam Ant. “Kýrie, eléison” means "Lord, have mercy" in Greek, and is a part of many liturgical rites in Eastern and Western Christianity. Kýrie, eléison; Christé, eléison; Kýrie, eléison is a prayer that asks "Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy." 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image How did cod end up on the Christmas tables around Europe? It is all thanks to a shipwreck. It all started with a shipwreck in 1432 that introduced Pietro Querini to stockfish - an ancient Viking method of wind-drying fish - which he brought to Venice almost a century before the Basques popularized salt cod through Atlantic trade. While stockfish relied on Arctic air and salt cod on preservation with salt, both became the perfect solution when the Church strictly forbade meat consumption on holy days. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Imagine a world where history is a blank page, rewritten daily to suit the rulers. Where love is a thoughtcrime, freedom is slavery, and a face on a telescreen watches you from every corner of your own home. George Orwell’s '1984' (1949) is not a prediction of the future, but a chilling, timeless dissection of totalitarianism’s ultimate goal: the annihilation of the individual mind itself. It is the definitive dystopian novel, a work so powerful that its concepts—Big Brother, Newspeak, doublethink, the Thought Police—have permanently entered our political vocabulary. The story unfolds in Airstrip One, a province of the totalitarian superstate Oceania, perpetually at war and under the gaze of the Party and its seemingly omniscient leader, Big Brother. Winston Smith, a low-ranking Party member whose job is to rewrite historical records, secretly harbors hatred for the regime. His small act of rebellion begins with a diary—a dangerous artifact of individual thought—and deepens with a forbidden love affair with Julia, a fellow Party member. Their hidden world of passion and whispered dissent is a fragile oasis in a desert of conformity and fear. Orwell’s genius lies in the systematic logic of his nightmare. The Party seeks power not for a better world, but for power’s own sake. Its tools are psychological, not just physical: Newspeak: A language designed to narrow the range of thought, making dissent literally unthinkable. Doublethink: The ability to hold two contradictory beliefs simultaneously, allowing the Party to alter reality at will. The Two Minutes Hate: A ritual of collective fury used to direct emotion and cement loyalty. Room 101: The ultimate torture chamber, where each person confronts their own worst fear. The novel’s terrifying power culminates not in a battle of armies, but in a battle for Winston’s soul. Captured by the Thought Police, he is broken not merely through pain, but through a relentless, philosophical dismantling of his reality by his interrogator, O’Brien. The famous climax—where Winston is forced to betray Julia and comes to love Big Brother—is one of literature’s most devastating portraits of psychological destruction. The Party’s victory is complete: it doesn’t just kill the rebel; it remakes him. In essence, *1984* is a stark warning about the fragility of truth and the mechanics of oppression. It explores how language can be corrupted to control thought, how surveillance can breed paranoia, and how a state that controls the past controls the future. While rooted in the ideologies of Stalinism and Nazism, its relevance echoes in any era where facts are blurred, language is weaponized, and privacy is sacrificed for security. The book’s enduring power is its bleak, uncompromising clarity. It offers no happy ending, no triumphant rebellion. Its purpose is prophylactic—to inoculate us against the seductive lies of absolute power by showing its logical, horrifying conclusion. *1984* remains the essential manual for recognizing the steps toward tyranny, a haunting reminder that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, not just against external forces, but against the corruption of our own minds and the very meaning of our words.
