🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image The Tunnel of Eupalinos was constructed in the 6th century BC on the Greek island of Samos to supply fresh water to the ancient city of Pythagoreion. It was commissioned by the tyrant Polycrates during a period when Samos was a powerful maritime state. Designed by the engineer Eupalinos of Megara, the tunnel was an unprecedented feat of ancient engineering. Remarkably, the tunnel was excavated simultaneously from both ends of the mountain. The two teams met with extraordinary accuracy, despite the lack of modern surveying instruments. Extending 1,036 meters beneath Mount Kastro, it remains one of the longest ancient tunnels ever built. The tunnel ensured a secure and hidden water supply, protecting the city during times of siege. Ancient writers, including Herodotus, praised the tunnel as a marvel of technical ingenuity. Used for centuries, the tunnel demonstrates the advanced mathematical and engineering knowledge of archaic Greece. Today, the Tunnel of Eupalinos is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a lasting symbol of human innovation. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1979, the Pink Floyd single “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2” went to #1 on the UK Singles Chart (December 15) "Part 2" of the three-part composition "Another Brick in the Wall", from Pink Floyd's 1979 rock opera “The Wall”, written by bass player Roger Waters was released as a single, Pink Floyd's first in the UK since "Point Me at the Sky" (1968). It sold over four million copies worldwide, was nominated for a Grammy Award and was #384 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Bass player Roger Waters wrote "Part 2" as a protest against rigid schooling, particularly boarding schools, and engineer Nick Griffiths recorded children singing the verse at Islington Green School, close to Pink Floyd's studio, which was a big part of the charm of the song. In exchange for performing vocals, the children of Islington School received tickets to a Pink Floyd concert, an album, and a single. Though the school received a payment of £1,000, there was no contractual arrangement for royalties for the children, but following a change to UK copyright law in 1996, they became eligible for royalties from broadcasts. After royalties agent Peter Rowan traced the choir members, they successfully lodged a claim for royalties with the Performing Artists' Media Rights Association in 2004. The single was a worldwide hit, going to #1 in the US, the UK and 13 other countries. #anotherbrickinthewall, #pinkfloyd, #rogerwaters, #davidgilmour, #wedontneednoeducation, #70smusic, #richardwright, #nickmason, #70srock, #thisdayinrock, #rockhistory, #rockmusic, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal, no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- Marine Life in The Philippines & S.E. Asia. and the World. Post #169: Betta Fish image The elegance of a Betta Fish. Some people of Thailand and Malaysia are known to have collected these fish prior to the 19th century from the wild which are line-bred for aggression in eastern Thailand. In the wild, betta spar for only a few minutes before one fish backs off. Bred specifically for heightened aggression, domesticated betta matches can go on for much longer, with winners determined by a willingness to continue fighting. Once a fish retreats, the match is over. Seeing the popularity of these fights, the king of Thailand, Rama III, started licensing and collecting these fighting fish. In 1840, he gave some of his prized fish to a man who, in turn, gave them to Theodore Edward Cantor, a medical scientist. Nine years later, Cantor wrote an article describing them under the name Macropodus pugnax.
