THE DOOMSDAY DJ:
TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE

“21st Century Schizoid Man" live at Hyde Park:
On this day in 1969, the King Crimson LP “In the Court of the Crimson King” debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #194 (December 13)
This iconic LP of the prog rock genre was critically acclaimed by The Who's Pete Townshend as "an uncanny masterpiece".
In 2015, Rolling Stone named it the second greatest progressive rock album of all time, behind Pink Floyd's “The Dark Side of the
Moon”.
Fans in the UK and Australia agreed, with the album peaking at #5 in the UK, and #7 in Australia, and also breaking into the Top 30 in the US and Canada.
Barry Godber (1945–1970), a computer programmer friend of King Crimson lyricist Peter Sinfield's, painted the design for the iconic album cover, using his own face, viewed through a mirror, as the model.
Godber sadly died in February 1970 from a heart attack, shortly after the album's release.
He was just 24 years old.
It was his only album cover; the original painting is now owned by Robert Fripp.
Fripp had said about Godber's artwork:
“Peter [Sinfield] brought this painting in and the band loved it.
I recently recovered the original from [managing label E.G. Records's] offices because they kept it exposed to bright light, at the risk of ruining it, so I ended up removing it.
The face on the outside is the Schizoid Man, and on the inside it's the Crimson King. If you cover the smiling face, the eyes reveal an incredible sadness…
What can one add? It reflects the music.”
