-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
Marine Life in The Philippines & S.E. Asia. and the World. Post #167: Fire Coral
I think everyone who has ever dived or snorkeled on a coral reef has had the unpleasant experience of getting a little too personal with fire coral. Not the nicest encounter, right?
But if you’ve never had such a close-up meeting - that's really good. Keep it that way in the future.
Those who have come too close to fire coral don’t need any explanation as to why we call it that.
For those who haven’t had this ‘pleasure’ - let me clarify:
Touching fire coral feels as if you’ve stuck your hand (or any other limb) straight into a flame.
And just to discourage you even further from this underwater rascal - remember that you don’t even need to physically touch it to get ‘burned’. Getting within 1-3 cm is enough. And if you do touch it, expect not only a ‘burn’, but also a cut. And that cut will fester for months.
To make things even more amusing, fire coral - despite being absolutely fiery - isn’t actually a real coral. It has very little in common with real corals. It’s an impostor, a rogue. It’s a close cousin of the Portuguese Man o’War, also called “The Floating Terror”. Had you known that earlier, you would’ve never gone near it.
So what should you do if you happen to cross paths with this underwater twat?
1. Keep the affected area still, as movement can spread the toxins.
2. Remove even the smallest pieces of fire coral from the wound with tweezers or duct tape.
3. Rinse with saltwater. Fresh water will cause nematocysts left in the wound or on the skin to release more venom, which will increase the pain, so avoid contact with freshwater.
4. Rinse the affected area with vinegar or alcohol. This will help deactivate the toxin.
5. If you have a hairdryer or anything else that can be used to heat the affected area, use it as soon as possible. Heat will also help deactivate the toxin.
6. Apply hydrocortisone cream two to three times daily as needed to relieve itching. Discontinue use immediately if any signs of infection appear.
And yeah - it is absolutely beautiful.

Turning a map of East Asia on its side accentuates the favorable strategic proximity of Japan, the Philippines and South Korea, showing that current forward positioning among Allies and Partners may be more advantageous than assumed, the United States Forces Korea (USFK) commander asserted in November 2025.
Does the “east-up” map change your perspective on the Indo-Pacific and, if so, how?
