"The Bamboo Mentality," is a way of thinking applicable to founders and success in general, highlighting that significant growth often follows a long period of unseen foundational work::
The Right Timing Matters: Bamboo explodes with growth only after years of steady preparation. Similarly, founders win by preparing early and acting when market conditions shift, much like early adopters in the dot-com era who became the largest businesses today.
The Right Resilience Matters: For the first five years, a bamboo tree barely breaks the surface; all growth is happening underground to form strong roots. Success works similarly, appearing "overnight" but being the result of years of patience, consistency, and compounding effort. Many people give up before the foundational work is complete.
The Right Markets Matter: After years of hidden work, bamboo shoots up to 90 feet tall in just six weeks. However, if planted in the wrong soil, it never grows. Founders must choose the right market, as no amount of effort can save a business in an unsuitable market. Identifying rising trends by gauging consumer interest is crucial.
The mentality encourages people to:
Invest in invisible foundations.
Stay patient while nothing seems to happen.
Be ready when growth compounds overnight.

Randall Arauz has pioneered research on the migratory routes of endangered species like leatherback turtles and hammerhead sharks, helping to identify a critical corridor between Costa Rica’s Cocos Island and Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands.
With many marine species travelling along this route, the need for greater protections is evident, and Arauz's work helped establish much needed changes. In 2021, Costa Rica expanded the protected area around Cocos Island from just 2,000 to over 54,000 square kilometers, and Ecuador soon followed with the establishment of the Hermandad Marine Reserve in 2022, protecting another 60,000 square kilometers.
While these increased safeguards are great progress, much of the corridor still lacks protection. Backed by Mission Blue, Arauz and CREMA-Costa Rica continue their work - collecting data, pushing for stronger protections, and building international momentum for a fully connected marine corridor.
