🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE On this day in 1976, the Al Stewart single “Year of the Cat” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #98 (December 11) The classic track was co-written by Al Stewart, and recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, by renowned engineer Alan Parsons. When he played Royal Albert Hall on May 16, 2015, Stewart talked about this song: “I was touring in America in 1975 and Peter Wood continually, at every soundcheck I ever went to, he played this riff on the piano. After I heard it about 14 times I said, 'You know, there's something about that. It sounds kind of haunting and nice. Can I write some lyrics to it?" And he said: "Sure, go and write some lyrics.' But that was the easy bit. The difficult bit was writing the lyrics.” After a few unsuccessful attempts, Stewart was starting to get frustrated: “I was beginning to lose my mind because I had this piece of music forever and I couldn't think of any words. I had a girlfriend at the time and she had a book on Vietnamese astrology, which was kind of obscure, and it was open at a chapter called 'The Year Of The Cat.' Now that's, I think, the year of the rabbit in Chinese astrology. I'm not too sure. I don't know a whole lot about a whole lot of things but I recognize a song title when I see one and that was a song title. Then the Casablanca movie came on television and….somehow or other, in between all of that and Vietnamese astrology, we came up with this. Thank you, Peter Wood, for writing the music. He's no longer with us but thank you, Peter." “Year of the Cat” became Stewart’s signature song, and is noted for its lengthy instrumental sections—over four minutes of the 6:40 album version is instrumental, including a long, melodic series of solos that encompass cello, violin, piano, acoustic guitar, distorted electric guitar, synthesizer and saxophone. It eventually rose to #13 in Australia, but went all the way to #3 in Canada, #6 in the Netherlands, and #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE “Somebody to Love”: On this day in 1976, Queen released the LP “A Day At The Races” (December 10) The follow-up LP to the hugely successful “A Night At The Opera” was similar in that both LPs were named after Marx Brothers movies, both LPs explored a wide variety of genres, both LPs had similar covers (Opera= white cover, Races = black cover), and both were anchored by a Queen epic single (Opera = “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Races = “Somebody to Love”). Interestingly, the rocker “Tie Your Mother Down" was written by Brian May in Tenerife in early 1968, two years before the formation of Queen. "The Millionaire Waltz" features John Deacon’s top notch bass work, and "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)" is another excellent track from the album. The album peaked at #1 in the UK, Japan and the Netherlands, #3 in Norway, #4 in Canada, and #8 in Australia and Sweden. It reached #5 on the US Billboard 200 and was Queen's third album to ship gold in the US, and subsequently reached platinum status in the same country. “A Day at the Races” was voted the 67th greatest album of all time in a national 2006 BBC poll. #queen, #adayattheraces, #somebodytolove, #classicalbum, #70smusic, #freddiemercuty, #brianmay, #rogertaylor, #johndeacon "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE “Let There Be Rock” from the album: On this day in 1978, the AC/DC album “If You Want Blood You’ve Got It” debuted on the Australian charts (December 11) The album is arguably one of the greatest live albums in Australian rock history. Short, sharp, and brutal! In his 1994 Bon Scott memoir Highway to Hell, author Clinton Walker observes, "Live albums, which tended to be double or triple sets in which songs short in their studio versions were stretched out into extended tedium, were for some reason popular in the seventies. If You Want Blood reversed this tradition... it boasted a blunt ten tracks and, allowing nothing extraneous, got straight to the point, that being raging AC/DC rock and roll." Ultimate Classic Rock wrote, “Other concert records may boast more songs, more Top 40 hits or even more crowd-pleasing gimmicks. But very few can challenge the sheer excitement and reckless abandon captured on AC/DC’s terrific concert document." It was AC/DC’s first live album, and their only live album with Bon Scott on lead vocals. The LP contains songs from the studio albums “T.N.T.”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “Let There Be Rock”, and “Powerage”. It’s also the last Bon Scott-era AC/DC album produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, who also produced the band's first five studio releases. While some sources suggest potential minor studio enhancements and the use of other tour tracks, the bulk of the material is from a concert at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland on 30 April 1978, during the band’s Poweage tour. That particular show is also remembered for the encore, when AC/DC came back on stage dressed in the Scottish football strip, paying homage to Scott's and the Young brothers' homeland. The album was listed at #2 on Classic Rock magazine's readers' poll of "50 Greatest Live Albums Ever". Riding a specially modified bicycle with reinforced parts and a massive front chainring, he pushed the limits of what was believed physically possible for a cyclist. His record became a landmark moment in extreme cycling and mechanical pacing, showcasing courage, engineering, and human endurance working together.
