Eventually though, it began getting traction in the dance clubs, entering the UK Singles Chart at #42 on 17 August 1974 and reaching #1 on 21 September, staying in the top spot for three weeks. It was then released in Australia and the United States, where it quickly shot to #1 the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and #1 on the Australian chart. The song with the quintessential Oriental riff was a smash hit around the world, also going to #1 in Austria, Belgium, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Germany, Ireland, Canada and the Netherlands. It eventually went on to sell eleven million records worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.
