🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️
-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
Strasbourg, Grand Est, France 🇫🇷
Strasbourg switched on Christmas this week, and the whole city center lit up in one moment. The main tree on Place Kléber is the anchor of the season, and the market spreads across the Grande Île just as it has since the 1500s. That long history is part of what makes the opening so special. You feel it as soon as you walk toward the cathedral and see the lights run across the old streets.
The market is large enough that you can spend hours without repeating the same stalls. Each square has a different focus. Place Broglie leans toward regional products, while the area near the cathedral draws the crowd for decorations and local crafts. The layout shifts every year, but the spirit stays the same. It is one of the few markets where the historical setting does as much work as the stalls themselves.
Food is a big part of the experience. Alsatian staples like hot bretzels, spaetzle, smoked sausages, and white mulled wine are everywhere. These are dishes people here actually eat during the season, so skip the generic snacks and head straight to the wooden stands run by local vendors. You get a better taste of the region that way.
If you go, aim for early evening before the crowds spill out across the bridges. Strasbourg feels different during Christmas, and the opening week is the best time to take it in before the busiest weekends arrive.

The Ossuary Monument in Kavadarci, North Macedonia, designed by architect Petar Mulichkovski and completed in 1976, stands as a significant example of Yugoslav memorial architecture.
The monument commemorates the local partisan fighters of World War II and reflects the era’s characteristic blend of brutalist forms with symbolic abstraction. The geometric composition, featuring sharp angles and sculptural concrete elements, embodies a sense of resilience and collective memory, common in Yugoslav commemorative structures.
The interplay of form and void, along with the monument’s integration into the surrounding landscape, reinforces the narrative of struggle and sacrifice while serving as a space for reflection and remembrance.

Victoria Villasana’s Vintage Photos
Mexican artist (b. 1982)
Working with vintage photographs of artists, musicians and politicians, Mexican textile artist Victoria Villasana applies a layer of colour to faded and damaged black and white images.
After studying design at ITESO University in Mexico, she spent more than a decade in London, where she became known in the urban art community for her sharp, strong and rebellious images of women.
Her work often features feminist icons, from singer Nina Simone to artist Frida Kahlo.
The dynamism of her work comes from the way the thread is left dangling far below the frame, giving it a surrealist aesthetic that reflects the acceptance of imperfection and its transience.

Louis Coulon with his kitten in 1890.
Back in 1904, Louis Coulon made headlines with his extraordinary 11-foot-long beard (3.35 meters), which he even used as a cozy resting spot for his beloved cats!
This incredible facial hair not only captured hearts but also secured his place in history, as he held the record for the longest beard ever worn in France.
Legend has it that Louis was already shaving by the age of 12, but his razor blade couldn’t keep up with his rapid beard growth.
By the time he was 14, his beard had already reached a staggering 50 centimeters (19.6 inches) in length. From then on, it was just a matter of letting it grow to monstrous proportions.
His impressive beard made him a popular photographic model from the late 19th century to the very beginning of the 20th century.
