-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
THE DOOMSDAY DJ:
TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE
On this day in 1977, the Queen LP “News of the World” debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #59 (November 26)
Like the previous three albums “Sheer Heart Attack”, “A Night At The Opera”, and “A Day at The Races”, “News of the World” sees Queen continuing to explore eclectic styles and genres: "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions": arena rock, "Who Needs You" features a Latin influence, “Sheer Heart Attack" is thrash punk-style, Sleeping on the Sidewalk" is based on blues rock, "Get Down, Make Love" dabbles in a kinda funky feel, and “My Melancholy Blues" has a blues/jazz vibe.
Slash from Guns N’ Roses has cited the guitar riff to “Fight From The Inside” as one of his favourite riffs of all time.
Roger Taylor wrote the song, sang it, and played drums rhythm guitar and bass on the track.
“It’s Late” (a Brian May special) and “Spread Your Wings” (written by John Deacon) are two of my favourite ever Queen tracks…
The LP was a worldwide chart success, going all the way to #1 in France and the Netherlands,#2 in Canada, #3 in the US, #4 in the UK and Norway, #7 in Germany, #8 in Australia, and #9 in Sweden and Austria.
The album's brilliant cover was a painting by American sci-fi artist Frank Kelly Freas.
The original version featured on a 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, which Roger Taylor owned a copy of.
Click on the link below to watch another great song from the album, “Spread Your Wings”, which, like “We Will Rock You”, was filmed in Roger’s backyard garden:
