RE: I want to highlight this response because I often feel this way. But, many of the people who have found their way to the fedi are already interested in software. It can be alien to your β€˜average person’. Just the other day my mother asked: β€œWhy do I see posts from people I don’t know on Facebook?” I explained that was the algorithm. ”So, someone *else* just decides what I see?! that’s awful.” She only just noticed! But, she seemed more open in that moment to learning about alternatives. View quoted note β†’
No ads. No* algorithm. No tracking. No influence campaigns. No AI. No face scanning. No bots. Just people on the internet talking to each other about all the little pointless things, (and big incredible things) in our lives. *I realize that the demonization of the term "algorithm" in social media is unfortunate in many ways. The demonization of the words "social media" itself is also missing the point. But this is about a simple take on what I think a lot of people are looking for right now.
Have you or a loved one been hurt by a terrible insect pun? You may be entitled to compANTsation.
Advice for Artists: Are you working on a painting of nature or where nature plays a key role? Consider adding ants. Ants are a part of every natural environment that isn't a glacier. If you already have a few ants, why not add more? How many species do you have? Even if it isn't a painting of nature ants are also found in most "unnatural" environments and can bring a touch of nature to your scene in a living room, prison, or church. Ants add a sense of scale and it's hard to have too many.
"Things that make your home look DATED!" The implication of these kinds of observations about interior design is that looking dated is bad and you ought to do something about it. I would like to totally question the premise. What does it mean when something looks "dated" it reminds you of the past? It recalls a trendy thing that has been forgotten. It's "out." There is power in this, and fashion and design is all about things that give us powerful emotions.
So. Plotters. You know, those printers that hold a pen and follow an SVG? Ten years ago I tried to convert a DIY laser cutting rig to do plotting and it didn't work out. I then tried one of the ones that draws on the wall with string and never could get it correctly tuned. After all this time is there a lazy consumer solution? Does anyone use a plotter on the regular and love it?
Have you ever written longer documents, such as essays, short stories or novels on your phone? Likewise, have you ever composed music that way?
I'm fascinated by people who eliminate major appliances widely considered "essential" I have a friend who lives without a fridge. I don't really get this because I like cold water and ... perishable things. But, he's made it work and I'm a little jealous. I know several people without smart phones. (That is not happening for me.) Have you found joy in this way?
Deep Look publishing slander of ants. SlANTer! (It's a pretty good episode.)
The Interior Design Odyssey Continues: The rental and housing markets shape a lot of the ideas and advice available about interior design. People who move often and rent aren't looking at making permanent changes to their spaces. People who own have houses not apartments. So, advice to make permanent changes to apartments is very rare. I hoping this is just a US thing and maybe by looking abroad I can find some more useful ideas.
