I don't get how people have such a positive spin on Assange's release. If it's some sort of victory, it's only a personal one to him and his family, not to the rest of us.
The cost for his freedom was the Truth and a warning shot to any potential daring journalist.
I'm not faulting him for taking the deal, I would do the same, but let's not pretend this is a huge win.

You are, unfortunately, correct Sir.
I think most recognize that. Having to plead guilty is total bullshit, but for the sake of a man who has been imprisoned, without trial, over total nonsense, for doing the ROGHT thing and telling the truth about murderers and criminals in power, to have him walk free is an awesome thing.
In short, the system is fucked, we should just be trying to save the people. And Assange deserves his freedom more than any of us.
I am happy for him. And you're right and not alone.
"This sets a dangerous practical precedent, and all those who value a free press should work to make sure that it never happens again. While we are pleased that Assange can now be freed for time served and return to Australia, these charges should never have been brought."

for what it is worth, relative to my own limited vision, there was no huge win to have. there possibly, probably, wasnt even a small win to have. the cost was & is already immense.
maybe the huge win is that he wasn't assassinated like he could've been. that he hung on long enough for the climate to change.
i can speak a little more to the journalism side of things, re: journalists, this wasnt a warning shot. you dont even get into this type of work if you already arent somewhat even mildly aware of what you are gonna be coming up against while severely underpaid with zero assurances. even simply covering town hall meetings ~> the amount of enemies, abuse, & shit you will take
People are just happy for him and his family.
Now I sound bitter 😂
