I appreciate what the Blacksy community is doing here, but I honestly don't see AT / Bluesky tech becoming truly decentralised anytime soon.
Think about what would happen if the folks behind Primal, Damus, etc became trigger-happy and started banning people from their relays left and right. Or even worse, if all of you posts gets filtered out of Primal (regardless of relays).
Nostr would go silent for you overnight. And you can trust me on this: it’s much, much simpler to set up a Nostr relay (you can run Haven on a potato and just use something like Cloudflare tunnels to expose it to the internet in seconds) and even your own client (see Nosostros, for instance) than the entire AT stack.
Self-hosting a PDS is 100% better than nothing. Having a custom app view like Blacksy is building is yet another step in the right direction... But while folks can’t "easily" self-host and self-moderate the entire AT stack on a 10-year-old laptop, and a statistically significant number of people actually do this, I don’t think AT can be considered decentralised in practice.
