Smriti - A memory in it's simplest form
Do our previous karma dictate the diseases and the bodies we get?
Do our smriti's take birth with us based on our previous life?
Our smriti's travel with us from one birth to another. As we take another birth the same smriti's will compel us to do the things based on our karm. And the same kind of atmosphere will keep on being created around us.
In Pashu yoni (animal species) we experience/undergo our karma, this is what has been taught in the shashtras. As we've lived all kinds of lives as animal before. We have the still have the animalistic tendencies within us. There is no bigger animal than a human being when we observe them.
Example - If a man grows up with cats, he will act like a cat. If he grows up with dogs, he will act like a dog. He has no smriti's of its human body. Although a cat will always act like a cat and a dog as a dog.
Even in humans there are 5 categories -

- Divya Manav (Godly Human)
Our world is created around our smriti's. If you thought, "Today, I would like to meet my friend", That's a smriti you've created. So even if you're working it's going on somewhere inside your head, that "Let's quickly finish this work and go and meet our friend." That wish becomes a smriti and will keep on acting in our life.
Like if someone was a sitar player in their last life. So even in this life they would be inclined towards playing a sitar. Similarly, if someone was a good swimmer, then even in this life they would have the talent for swimming and they won't fear water as well.
Let's say if previous life someone died by drowning. Then even in this life they would fear water.
Smriti's do not take birth, rather we take birth because of our smriti's. Our birth is decided based on the smriti's that we've carried.
All our smriti's of all our previous births are stored inside our chitt. If your chitt is changed our modified. you're whole life can be changed.
5 core elements of consciousness

Where do our other smriti's come from? Other than the ones of our previous birth? How are they stored and how are they changed?
They don't come from anywhere, we create them.
Till the point where, jivan, or life consciousness cannot take birth till that point smriti's cannot be stored.
Memories are never recorded in the atma and neither are they recorded in the body. The only place the memories can be recorded is the chitt.
The life energy and life consciousness are 2 separate things. And the smriti is spread across each and ever cell. And it doesn't go away for ages, birth after birth. It becomes very hard to get rid of it. To get rid of it you need Purna Guru like Babaji.
When jivan (some might call it life consciousness) separates from the physical body it's effects are spread around in the environment. But when the jivan enters a body its effects get contained by the body it enters and that is its punishment. This is the way we keep continue carrying on our smritis and karm.
