https://spectator.com/article/the-glorious-weirdness-of-christmas-in-thailand/
Christmas in Thailand is one of the strangest festivities of the modern world. A country that is almost entirely Buddhist, which does not recognise Christmas as a public holiday, whose people have almost no idea what the event means, nevertheless erects giant glittering Christmas trees in its malls and intersections. These are larger and more numerous than the ones you see in London. It’s not difficult to imagine a future where British tourists fly to Bangkok to rediscover the mood of Christmas, not in shopping but in pagan feeling.
December shoppers in the Bangkok mega-malls are greeted by choirs of small girls in Santa hats who ring bells and sing about the Wenceslas and the feast of Stephen. The eerie strains of ‘Silent Night’ echo down floors of office furniture and electronics. No one seems to ask why the night is silent or why a man named Wenceslas went out on the feast of Stephen. No one here knows why we farangs sing songs about him. But then does anyone in England? The words are lost, meaningless in both places, but here the overall mood is lighter. The fun is there. Perhaps because Christians are only 1 per cent of the population. An animist spirit prevails and the trashy, globalised, commercial holiday somehow, strangely, doesn’t feel as trashy, globalised or commercial as it does in many other places. Purists will argue that it’s all empty – a cynical misunderstanding. All right. But something else is there.

Florida prosecutor agrees: Photography is not a crime
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
New York, Dec. 18, 2025 — Photojournalist Dave Decker was arrested in November while documenting a protest in Miami, Florida. A coalition of 23 press organizations spoke out against the charges — and this week the prosecutor agreed.
The following statement can be attributed to Adam Rose, deputy director of advocacy for Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF):“Journalists have a distinct role at protests. They are not participants, merely observers. A broad local and national coalition said this in unison, and we were glad to see all charges dropped against Dave Decker. Hats off to his attorneys, lawyers for the Florida State Attorney’s Office and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, and all the community groups who rallied to his side.“At the same time, that’s a lot of people who had to work on something entirely preventable. I hope law enforcement officers take this to heart: Swearing an oath to protect the community means protecting everyone — including press. This is an opportunity for agencies like the sheriff’s office and Florida Highway Patrol to take proactive steps and review training approaches. Freedom of the Press Foundation is happy to help.
“And of course, it would be nice to see an apology to Dave and an offer to fix any of his equipment they damaged.”

@npub1qane...sva7 nope... none of my hats have feathers
Hindsight is always 20-20, I am sure with more info you would have handled the situation differently and intelligently despite the risk of job loss that existed. #3 is definitely the most absurd reason of them all because it makes every jab's efficacy conditional on everyone getting it, which makes zero sense at all if we are at the same time touting the jab's effectiveness. That said, hats off to you for still standing your ground regardless then 🫡

The central marketplace in Quenelle is a maze, built of tall flowering hedges, with many twists & turns, spiraling into a common center. It makes shopping trips more of an event where you have to slow down, explore, & socialize rather than rush through. There are benches to sit, rest, & chat if you need a break. People often wear silly shopping hats, fashioned like beasts or plants.
There's a lady on FB marketplace near me that gets her dog to model knitted dog hats for the winter https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/1pqa069/theres_a_lady_on_fb_marketplace_near_me_that_gets/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

It's almost my 2 year anniversary of posting spotted observations of life in Aotearoa New Zealand, so I thought it would be fun for today's post to be the one that kicked it all off. It might explain why we immediately fell in love with this awesome little city that we now call home.❤️🌺
Here we go:
#Spotted Before Christmas 2023 in a Small City in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A woman (80s?) is drawing willies wearing Santa hats on the walls of a public loo. She's emphatically explaining that they: "represent life's funny little ways".
In a garden centre: A sweaty looking man (50s?) bellows: "Darl, you like flowery shit, right?" into his phone, at presumably the love of his life.
Her profanity is audible and delightful for onlookers.
A woman (20s?) is standing in the cheese section of a supermarket, obviously completely overwhelmed.
A sales assistant comes up, puts a hand on her shoulder and says: "It's all gonna be okay, love. In five days it'll all just be indigestion. You'll do fine."
A dad (40s?) is giving his small human (5?) a very serious lecture about the importance of getting his mum the perfect watering can.
Two brothers (14 & 16?) are having a whisper-argument over whether or not the younger one is a "dick" for wanting to get their mum a boxing game for Christmas (That he totally wanted to play.) They compromise on soap by the time they get to checkout.
(Continued Below)
Oy mate you gotta problem with the Santa hats??
Just saying, Jesus wouldn't talk like that and you know it.
Go read the Jefferson Bible. It cuts out all the other stuff except for Jesus's direct words.
Jesus spoke of John as Elijah reincarnated yet, because some dudes in fancy robes and hats that never walked the Earth with Jesus who lived 300 years after Jesus said some shit, now that's "canonical". You know that "canonical" is a synonym of "fiat", right?
Reincarnation is real. There's tons of scientific study that has been done on the subject. Closed minded dogmatists would never research this though because dogmatists already "know" the "truth". They just don't realize that every reincarnation comes with some amount of momentum that carries over from the last life. It's in all the case studies. People maintain anomalous flavor palettes from the previous life, behavioral patterns, sense of social status, relationships, etc. This includes cases that do or do not involve a gender switch. According to the University of Virginia's extensive research on the subject, roughly 10% of their case studies involved a gender switch between lives. A poll of roughly 30 nations found that 9% of people identify as L, G, B, or T. That's not a coincidence. That's momentum carrying over from the previous incarnation as the opposite gender.
You are again throwing shade on a huge portion of the population who would be far healthier if they understood this, but, due to charlatan dogmatists masquerading as pious, they are made to feel somehow "less than". How Christ-like of you to contribute to that. You're so pious.
Now you're resorting to throwing women under the bus by derogatorily using the word "pussies". You're a piece of work man. You need Jesus because you certainly don't have Jesus.
Words are not violence but words can lead to self-harm. You will be horrified when you go through your life review after death and you see the domino effects of your rhetorical laziness.
Good coverage of a great guy and a linchpin project. Hats off to @notmandatory and the BDK team.
